Not super, but here are some pics. My camera just isn't very easy to focus for shots like this.
This is from last night, since I was afraid that clouds were going to block the eclipse tonight.
Getting things started
That last one was processed in Photoshop a bit to bring out some more of the background stars.
Can't wait to see if any other Voxers were able to get some good shots.
Wow. Just wow.
HD makes the shadows look almost fake they are so black.
Interest comment on the website. There is not earthrise or earthset on the moon's surface, since it is tidally locked to Earth. You only see photos like this from a craft orbiting the moon. The original "Earthrise" photo was taken by Jim Lovell and Frank Borman on Apollo 8 in 1968
A more recent shot:
This one is from last night
And this one from tonight. I'm fascinated by the different shadows that get revealed as the terminator makes its way across the moon. Also the first picture is cropped. On this one I turned on the digital zoom (which I'd never done before on the Lumix) to see if it would make for sharper images. Still need to take some more test shots to figure that out
I am just starting to realize the power of Photoshop. The last week or so I've started shooting almost everything in RAW format. I never really knew what that meant until I started playing around with the RAW tool in Photoshop and realized that as long as I get a picture in focus and don't completely under- or overexpose it I can turn it into something nice.
Here are a bunch of moon shots, but I played around with the saturation levels, exposure, contrast, etc to get a few different looks.
I think I took some decent photos. Not great, but decent. Both of the ones below are cropped substantially.
Yes, it involved getting up at 5am. And yes I had to carry my tripod and camera a few hundred yards up to the cemetery behind my house to get some clear views. But whatever, I'm a photo dork. :)
What can I say, I like to break out the tripod now and again. I ordered a remote shutter cable last week but unfortunately it has not arrived and will not arrive before tomorrow's fireworks in Boston.
I met some friends at 21 Nickels tonight and as I left my car to cross the street to the bar I noticed a very bright light in the sky. Since we were near Boston I figured it was a plane and stopped to watch it, but it never moved in the minute I stood looking. After talking to my friends inside I found out it was Venus. It was the brightest non-Moon object I have ever seen in the night sky. I imagine if you live in an area where light pollution isn't an issue it is even more impressive. I'd suggest wandering outside tomorrow around dusk and checking the horizon. And if look slightly to the right of Venus, you'll see Saturn. Definitely worth a look!
That said, I took these on ten second shutter delay and they came out pretty nicely. I should probably process out the aberration on the bottom in PS, but it's late and I don't want to bother.
